Whilst we are absolutely passionate about implementing our latest Disaster Recovery backup technology, which is an imaging software product, it had never been put to test in a real live ‘disaster’.
One of our clients who relies on 3 servers to run their multimillion turnover business, uses one of their servers to process around 300 staff/contract wages each week. This is a fairly critical part of their business and pretty key to keeping their staff happy!
Although this was a 12 month old Dell server, they do unfortunately have hardware faults from time to time – and one Monday afternoon one of the fundamental components failed. Now you might think, really this size of business should have 2 servers for failover (well they do for their main server, as they are pretty smart), however it was decided they could live with 3 hours downtime on their Payroll Server without any major effect on the business.
3 hours is a very short time to have a server rebuilt you might think, and you’d be correct. Impossible from our experience (more like 3 days of pain).
As if by magic – We had our clients Payroll server up and all staff fully operational within 2 hours.
Now for the behind the scenes; every hour our Disaster Recovery software takes a full image of the server onto an external USB 2.0 drive (very small lightweight ones that you can carry offsite). These images are fully encrypted, so no worries about losing a drive and someone accessing all your data.
This software allows you to take this image and copy it onto ANY HARDWARE machine in the event of a disaster, and as if by magic you have your new Server and it preserves every setting and the DOMAIN. We wheeled our spare server in, copied the image on to it, got them up and running and left Dell to replace the hardware components on their Payroll server. When it was all fixed, we popped in to their office out of hours and copied the image back on their own server.
What does this mean for non technical people; it means your server and business will be up and running in 3 hours rather than 3 days.
Please give us a call if you are interested in this extremely cost effective and affordable solution.
